Frequently asked questions
SundaMind is an app for self-reflection and well-being, built by the psychologist and licensed psychotherapist Dirk Werner.
- Is SundaMind free?
- Yes. The core is free: daily check-in, calm exercises and your journal. You can always write gratitude and joy freely — your growing collection comes with Founder. Some things go deeper, if you like.
- Does SundaMind replace psychotherapy?
- No. SundaMind is an app for self-reflection and well-being and does not replace professional psychotherapeutic or psychiatric treatment. In acute crises, please contact a professional or emergency services immediately.
- What does the name SundaMind mean?
- SundaMind combines the Sanskrit word 'sundara' (beautiful, harmonious, well-composed) with the Japanese 'sunda' (become clear, brightened). The name stands for a mind that doesn't need to be perfect to become clear.
- Who built SundaMind?
- SundaMind was built by Dirk Werner, a licensed psychotherapist and founder of Werner Productions.
- Who or what is Sunda?
- Sunda is the presence that accompanies you through the app — in the Companion, a real AI conversation. Sunda mirrors and asks; it doesn't interpret or advise. Sunda only 'remembers' the current conversation, plus a quiet, read-only sense of your focus question and general pattern tendency — only to ask better questions, never to pin you down. Sunda keeps no profile of your conversations.
- What are the 8 dimensions?
- Instead of just 'good/bad', SundaMind captures well-being across eight fields: mood, sleep, energy, connection, body, focus, calm, meaning. At check-in you rate as many as you like — the more you rate, the richer your pattern emerges. The radar makes the eight visible.
- What are the behavior experiments?
- Small, concrete exercises from CBT, ACT and Positive Psychology — examine a thought, shift your perspective, consciously capture a moment of joy. You try one and reflect afterwards. No homework, no right or wrong.
- What is the focus question?
- At the start you pick a question that's on your mind right now (e.g. 'What actually gives me energy?'). It's not a goal to complete — it quietly colors how Sunda accompanies you, and it may change. You can edit it in Settings anytime.
- What happens if I write something distressing?
- Wherever you write — check-in, reflection, Companion — SundaMind watches for crisis language. If it notices something, it gently places support resources alongside, without interrupting or judging your writing; in acute cases, a crisis screen takes the place of a Companion reply. SundaMind is not emergency care — in acute danger call 112 immediately (EU-wide), or in Germany the Telefonseelsorge at 0800 111 0 111.
- Can I install SundaMind on my device?
- Yes. SundaMind is a web app and installs straight from the browser — on phone, tablet and desktop, no app store required. It then opens in its own window with its own icon. An internet connection is still needed, SundaMind does not work offline. How your data is stored is explained under Security.
- Is my data secure?
- Yes. SundaMind is GDPR-compliant. All data is transmitted encrypted and stored on EU servers. Journal entries and mood data are private and not shared with third parties.
- Does anyone read my entries?
- Your entries are private and are not shared with third parties. How storage and AI processing work in detail is described in the Privacy Policy.
- What is the AI pattern analysis?
- The AI analyzes your 8-dimensional well-being scores (mood, sleep, energy, connection, body, focus, calm, meaning) and gives you personalized, psychologically grounded improvement tips.
- What else can the pattern analysis do?
- Besides the radar chart, there is an AI analysis of your eight dimensions with concrete suggestions, plus a period comparison. Both are Founder features.
- Which time periods can I compare in the pattern analysis?
- You can freely pick two weeks or two months and compare them — SundaMind shows the difference per dimension and, if you like, a short AI comment. The comparison is a Founder feature.
- What are Solfeggio frequencies?
- Solfeggio frequencies are specific sound frequencies (396–852 Hz) used in complementary sound practices. SundaMind plays calm tones at these frequencies. They do not replace medical treatment.
- Do breathing exercises work?
- Breathing exercises can briefly reduce stress and anxiety symptoms. A 2023 meta-analysis of twelve randomised trials with 785 adults found a small-to-moderate effect on stress (Hedges g = −0.35), and across 20 studies an effect on anxiety symptoms (g = −0.32). Slow breathing measurably changes heart rate and heart rate variability during practice. For sleep problems there are positive individual studies, but not yet a sufficient basis to call breathing exercises a stand-alone treatment for sleep disorders. The effect differs from person to person. With persistent difficulties they complement professional care rather than replace it.
- What is the 4-7-8 technique?
- Breathe in for four counts, hold for seven, breathe out for eight. One cycle therefore takes about 19 seconds — roughly three breaths per minute. The exercise can be relaxing in the short term and works well as a calm preparation for sleep. First direct studies exist, but they are small and come from specific groups; in a comparison study with 84 students, rhythms of six breaths per minute changed heart rate variability more strongly. The method's public profile currently exceeds its scientific backing. Start with a few repetitions and breathe only as slowly as stays comfortable.
- What is box breathing?
- Four phases of equal length: in, hold, out, hold — usually four seconds each. A steady rhythm with short pauses can help focus attention and slow your breathing. Direct studies of this exact four-phase form are limited; a 2026 series of individualised studies found only a small average reduction in stress, with marked differences between individuals. An advantage over other slow breathing patterns has not been demonstrated. You may shorten the pauses or leave them out.
- What is coherence breathing?
- Slow, even breathing at about five to six breaths per minute, without holds — in SundaMind five seconds in, five seconds out. Of the three breathing exercises it is the best studied physiologically: a 2022 meta-analysis reviewed 223 studies on voluntary slow breathing and found a clear rise in heart rate variability during practice. It can bring heartbeat and breath into closer alignment and briefly reduce physical arousal. That does not establish superiority for stress, anxiety or sleep — a study with 400 adults found no difference compared with faster control breathing. The effect differs from person to person.
- What is PMR?
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation (after Jacobson) is an established relaxation method: muscle groups are consciously tensed and released. It can reduce physical tension and perceived stress. Practised regularly, it can support sleep quality and help prevent migraine or tension-type headaches. Effects differ from person to person. With a medical condition, PMR complements professional treatment — it does not replace it.
- What does a gratitude journal do?
- Practised regularly — for instance by noting each day what you are grateful for — gratitude exercises can strengthen satisfaction and well-being (Emmons & McCullough 2003). Research also describes links with greater optimism and enjoyment of life (Watkins et al. 2003), better sleep quality and falling asleep faster (Wood et al. 2009), greater resilience under strain (Kashdan & Breen 2007) and closer social bonds (Algoe et al. 2008). Effects differ from person to person. With a medical condition, a gratitude journal complements professional treatment — it does not replace it.
- What is the 'Inner Safe Place'?
- The Inner Safe Place is a trauma-sensitive stabilisation exercise from trauma therapy. You imagine a place where you feel completely safe – real or imaginary. The exercise helps with overwhelm and stress.
- How does the gamification system work?
- SundaMind rewards you constructively for small steps: XP points, streak days, 18 badges, and a growing tree as a metaphor for your growth. The system is deliberately gentle and non-pressuring.
- Can I export my data?
- Yes. You can export and print your report anytime. The pattern breakdown as PDF, TXT or JSON comes with it, if you'd like to go deeper.
- What languages is SundaMind available in?
- SundaMind is fully available in German and English. More languages are planned.
- What does accessibility mean in SundaMind?
- SundaMind follows the WCAG 2.1 AA standard. This means: all interactive elements are reachable by keyboard, screen readers receive meaningful labels (ARIA labels), color contrasts meet minimum requirements, and forms have visible error messages. The goal is that the app is usable for people with visual impairments, motor limitations or cognitive differences.
- What are ARIA labels and what are they for?
- ARIA stands for 'Accessible Rich Internet Applications'. ARIA labels are invisible text descriptions that explain to screen readers (text-to-speech software for blind users) what an element does. Example: the Emergency Help button has the ARIA label 'Open emergency help – crisis line numbers'. This way a blind person hears the purpose of the button even when no visible text is present.
- How do I navigate SundaMind with a keyboard?
- All interactive elements are reachable via the Tab key. Enter or Space activate buttons. Arrow keys navigate within tab bars and option groups (e.g. mood emojis). Escape closes dialogs. In the app screen: 1–5 switch tabs, D toggles light/dark mode, ? opens the keyboard shortcuts overview.
- Does SundaMind support screen readers?
- Yes. SundaMind has been tested with NVDA (Windows), VoiceOver (iOS/macOS) and TalkBack (Android). All screens have landmark roles (main, nav, dialog), live regions for dynamic content and complete ARIA labels. The radar chart has a text alternative with all dimension values.
- Can I adjust the font size?
- Yes. Under Settings → Appearance you can choose between four font sizes: Small (S), Normal (M), Large (L) and Extra Large (XL). The change applies immediately to the entire app.
SundaMind is no substitute for psychotherapy and is not a medical device. In an acute crisis call 112 (across the EU) or your local emergency number. In Germany, Telefonseelsorge offers free support in German on 0800 111 0 111.
